The main character, Katie, has a husband who abused her a lot. She made the decision to run away so that she wouldn’t have to deal with him anymore. But her husband, Kevin, stalks her because he’s obsessed with her. So he goes to find her and somehow he succeeds. Kevin is also a detective so he has connections and can go into the system and track her. Once he arrives at the small town he suspects Katie is living in, he asks around to see if anyone knows who she is and where she is at. He finds her house and a start to search through things...bad part is, he finds what he’s looking for.
"He recognizes the shampoo and conditioner; he recognizes the brand of toothpaste. In the kitchen, he rifled through the drawers, opening them one by one until he found a utility bill. It was listed in the name of Katie Feldman, and now he leaned against the cupboard, staring at the name feeling a sense of completion." (Sparks, 267)
This gives you a glimpse of how he is obsessed with finding his wife and how determined he is to get her back, even though it isn’t because he loves her.
"He always made her keep receipts and give him any change, but after she'd run away the second time, he’d also started locking his wallet in the gun box with his guns when he went to sleep." (Sparks, 193)
In this quote it shows that Katie didn’t run away once but twice! As you can tell, she was very tired of him always controlling her and taking charge without asking his own wife what she thought. He always had to be the boss and if she said anything he would get very upset and beat her. This was probably why she wanted to leave so badly. She decided that enough was enough and she would do anything to get away from him.
